In 2007, the Roy Morgan research
organisation identified that:
71% of global survey participants believe environmental issues are the most important facing the world
44% of Australians believe that Global Warming is the most important environmental issue
71% of Australians beieve in relation to Global Warming, if we don't act now it will be too late
(Roy Morgan, May 2007)
Since 2005, global warming and climate change issues have been dominating mainstream media, with political, environmental and
business debate in earnest from late 2006. The drought and water scarcity issues we have been facing throughout Australia have
added to the sensitivity and knowledge of Australians around carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. As a consequence
and from our own recent independent research, we know that Australians are concerned about these issues and
want more leadership and solutions.
GORAIL is an initiative of QR Limited to raise the profile and awareness of the energy efficiency
and low carbon alternative technology of rail transport compared to road and other more intensive energy and
carbon modes for both freight and passenger transport.
QR asked David Gershon to share his thoughts with us on his "Low Carbon Diet" program and rail's contribution to the
climate change challenges ahead.
The David Gershon Interview video presentation is 14 Mb in size and could take some time to download. David Gershon
was an advisor to the Clinton Whitehouse. He applies his expertise to various issues requiring community,
organizational, or societal transformation. His clients range from large cities and organizations to social
entrepreneurs and transformational small businesses. He has addressed issues ranging from environmental
behavior change to emergency preparedness; from organizational talent development to low-income neighborhood
revitalization. Longitudinal research studies indicate that adopted behavior changes are sustained over time.
He conceived and organized, in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund and ABC Television, one of
the planet’s first major global initiatives, the First Earth Run. At the height of the Cold War, using the
mythic power of relaying fire around the world, millions of people in partnership with the world’s political
leaders and media participated in creating a profound sense of our connectedness. Many in Russia and Eastern
Europe indicated that the planetary unitive field that was created helped inspire glasnost and the Velvet
Revolution that followed.
