FIND OUT ABOUT OUR PROJECTS

EMISSION REDUCTIONS THROUGH IMPROVED OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES

QR Limited established a corporate objective, “Our Customers are able to achieve their sustainability outcomes (social, safety and environment) through the use of QR's services and products”.

In making environmental performance the responsibility of all QR staff, QR developed a strategic Environmental Improvement Plan and implemented the plan initiatives over the last 5 years.

With operating revenue of over $2.5 billion, assets of $9 billion and a workforce of 13,700 people, QR is one of the nation’s major transport businesses.

The Environmental Improvement Plan incorporates environmental Principles for Action and associated targets.

For greenhouse gas emissions, these targets include:
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions per unit throughput by at least 2% per year;
  • Inclusion of fuel efficiency targets in the design standards for all new major infrastructure and rollingstock development and refurbishment projects;
  • Determining the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating for each of QR’s major fixed sites;
  • Investigating the viability of carbon sequestration measures; and
  • Development an environmental accounting process that clarifies the correlation between operational activity, productivity, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions.
Over the last 7 years, QR has achieved a reduction of 1.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions as a member of the Australian Greenhouse Challenge Plus.

2007 has brought a significant focus on carbon and greenhouse gas emissions with the release of GORAIL, highlighting the superior energy efficiency and low carbon intensity of rail transport, and continuing a greater focus on energy and carbon saving activities across QR.
