In addition to diesel fuel, QR Limited is a major customer of traction power electricity.

QR commissioned industry reports in 2007 to evaluate their energy choices choices going forward.

We are responding to the emerging carbon economy and greenhouse gas emission reductions as well as increasing energy costs and fuel scarcity issues into the future.

QR will be working with energy suppliers in the increasingly deregulated energy market as well as liaising with their stakeholders to achieve the optimum outcome in greenhouse gas emission reductions alongside continuity of supply as a community owned and operated railway.

QR's rail freight is 3 - 11 times more energy efficient than road freight and our passenger rail transport is 2.4 - 9.7 times more energy efficient than other modes including cars, motorcycles, buses and ferries.

A freeway lane can move 2,500 people per hour, a busway can move 7,000 people and hour and a passenger train can move 50,000 people an hour.

Rail is already the most energy efficient mode for freight and passenger transport and we believe it is our obligation to lead the industry in greenhouse gas and carbon emission innovation.
