THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CARBON SAVINGS OF RAIL

CREATING CORPORATE RAIL CARBON CREDITS

CREATING CORPORATE CARBON CREDITS FROM RAIL FREIGHT

Transport emissions growth comparison reference source adapted from www.greenhouse.gov.au, Inventory2004.pdf

Line haul freight movements by rail are at least 3 - 4 times more energy efficient per net tonne kilometre (NTK) than moving the same freight by trucks. (Reference: Australasian Railway Association Fact Sheet - Rail Safer, Cleaner, Greener, March 2007)

Energy Efficiency can be measured by comparing how many kilometres one tonne of freight can be moved via the different transport modes if measured by the same mega joules energy unit.

One freight train between Brisbane and Sydney can replace 150 semi trailers, saving 45,000 litres of fuel and 130 tonnes of greenhouse gases.(Reference: Department of the Environment and Heritage, Australian Greenhouse Office, National Greenhouse Gas Inventory 2003)

One freight train between Brisbane and Townsville replaces 32 semi trailers, saving 13,700 litres of fuel and 40 tonnes of greenhouse gases. (Reference: Australasian Railway Association - Greenhouse Challenge Plus Award Publication 2005)
