NEWS - 27th MARCH 2008

INTERMODAL RAIL FREIGHT REDUCES GHG'S

CERES have extended their Food Miles in Australia Report with A comparison of emissions from road and rail transport on the average Australian grocery basket.
Their previous report identified that the average Australian shopping basket of goods has travelled 70,803 kms.

Findings from the report:

Existing Intermodal Freight Solution - all food items transported by a combination of primary road and rail freight, within the existing rail track and freight depot network, preferring rail wherever practical would deliver an estimated greenhouse gas emission reduction of 39% on the average Australian shopping basket.

A larger Intermodal Freight Solution - all food items transported by a combination of road and rail freight, within the existing rail track but with the addition of a much larger or ‘ubiquitous’ rail freight depot network, and preferring rail wherever practical would deliver an estimated greenhouse gas emission reduction of 52% on the average Australian shopping basket.
