It’s official: rail is the outright winner in the rail vs. road debate.
With ongoing investments in rail infrastructure, rail offers an alternative ‘greener’ transport mode
that is energy efficient, offers minimal road congestion, higher fuel efficiencies, and is responsible
for lower forms of pollution including greenhouse gas emissions compared to road transport.
Cognisant of rail’s energy efficiency and carbon savings, QRNational has launched a benchmarking initiative
– GORAIL.
QRNational spokesperson, John Montague said in-depth research conducted by accredited authorities including
the Department of Environment and Heritage, confirms rail freight is 3 to 11 times more energy efficient than
road freight. Changing your freight from road to rail could reduce your transport carbon footprint by up to 75%
or more.
The focus on environment issues is highlighted daily throughout the media and one of the biggest contributors
to greenhouse gas emissions in Australia is the transport sector.
QRNational’s launch of GORAIL is backed by comprehensive scientific data and with thorough reports compiled
by leading industry authorities such as Rail Safer, Cleaner, Greener, March 2007, and Apelbaum Consulting
Report 2007, Australasian Railway Association, Greenhouse Challenge Plus Award Publication 2005 and the
Department of the Environment and Heritage, Australian Greenhouse Office, National Greenhouse Gas Inventory 2003.
Importantly one freight train between Brisbane and Sydney can replace 150 semi trailers, saving 45,000 litres
of fuel and 130 tonnes of greenhouse gases. One freight train between Brisbane and Townsville replaces 32 semi
trailers, saving 13,700 litres of fuel and 40 tonnes of greenhouse gases. Line haul freight movements by rail
are at least 3 to 11 times more energy efficient per net tonne kilometre (NTK) than moving the same freight
by trucks.
Energy efficiency can be measured by comparing how many kilometres one tonne of freight can be moved via the
different transport modes if measured by the same mega joules energy unit.
In Queensland, articulated trucks are 3.1 times more energy intensive and rigid trucks are 11.7 times more
energy intensive than rail. For Australia the corresponding intensities are 9.5 times more energy intensive
for rigid trucks and 2.8 times more energy intensive for articulated trucks.
QRNational offers manufacturers and the freight forwarding industry choice in minimising their carbon footprint
by utilising rail as their preferred mode of transport.
The reality of our market today is that we all need to consider our choices when it comes to our environment
and rail is a sensible, environmentally friendly and environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional
road transport.
In a world where carbon trading will become part of our future, rail solutions afford industry a real
opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and bank some environmentally responsible initiatives that
will impact on all of our futures.
Mr Montague is launching the GORAIL initiative this week in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney as part of QRNational
Intermodal's lauch of their new Perth Services.
