Transport produces 14.4% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Australia, Rail produces 0.37%.
Rigid trucks are between 9.5 times (Australia wide) and 11.7 times (in Queensland) more energy and greenhouse gas intensive than
Queensland Rail for freight transport.
Articulated trucks (i.e. semi-trailers) are between 3.1 times (Australia wide) and 2.8 times (operating in
Queensland’s non-urban regions during 2004/05) more energy and greenhouse gas intensive than Queensland Rail for freight
transport.
On a full fuel cycle basis, articulated and rigid trucks were 2.9 times and 8.8 times more emission intensive
than rail in Queensland, compared with 2.9 times and 8.6 times, nationally.
Rail also offers a national freight solution that reduces road congestion and driver shortages, taking 150 semi-trailers
off the road.
Their GORAIL initiative offers companies an opportunity to audit their
transport carbon footprint to minimise their greenhouse gas emissions through transport. A recent report
from CERES Food Miles Report
calculated that the goods in an average Australian shopping basket has travelled 70,803 kms - the majority
by truck. Reference: Apelbaum Consulting
