CARBON EMISSION REDUCTIONS THROUGH IMPROVED WAGON DESIGN
 QR Limited have
demonstrated their rollingstock and wagon innovation through increasing haulage capacity by introducing
an additional 525 high capacity 104 tonne wagons with more non-metallic centre plate wear liners that
substantially reduce cornering forces.
We have been prototyping the redesign of container wagons to enable cost and tare mass reduction as well as
modifying 350 displaced coal wagons (63 tonne) for bulk grain transport.
 Additionally, we have been including bogie technology
improvements to reduce wear and rolling resistance (low friction pivot centres, larger wear surfaces,
light casting techniques and optimised wheel profiles to reduce rail/wheel friction).
As well as improving asset utilisation through revised timetabling to reduce dead running and optimising the
matching of train size to demand, QR have also been containerising small freight haulage to increase
operational running efficiencies.
